New fridge released, time for you to upgrade?

Hello,

I watch my fair share of modern telemarketers.. I mean... influencers... I mean... tech reviewers or something. Every time a new phone or laptop comes out, the question that they ask and try to answer is if you should upgrade from the previous generation or the last two generations. I mean, there are so many new features! The camera is 25% better in low light conditions and the new chip is exactly 9.39104194019999931001% faster sometimes.

Some people have the money and want to use it to buy the latest things. Other people sell their current stuff and use the money to offset the price of the new generation. That's all great. I think, however, most people will not upgrade anything until their device is like 3-4 years old and maybe slightly deteriorating. After all, why not treat yourself to something new after "such a long time"?

Here is where today's sponsor comes in... lol jk. Now what the hell does this have to do with fridges? I was just thinking of how silly and stupid it would sound if these telemarketers did the same thing with fridges, panini presses or toilet brushes. If we used the same reasoning to justify a new fridge by saying "well I have had my fridge for 4 years, so why not upgrade to a new one!" It sounds absolutely ridiculous, unless you are talking about a toilet brush. In that case, please do change upgrade it more often.

But anyway, what I try to do is to only upgrade something if it actually bothers me or no longer serves me. In that case, if I have the money to do it, then it does not matter if I am getting something new a few months after purchasing it or 10 years after.

When I first got an iPhone 12, I had not gotten the Pro version which came with a 2x telephoto camera because all the tech reviewers talked about how it was not necessary and that the digital 2x zoom looked just as good as the 2x telephoto, especially during the day. Unfortunately, I would have to scroll from 1x all the way to 2x (through 1.1, 1.2... 1.9 and 2x) when trying to take my 100th daily picture of my parents' dog doing the same things he's been doing for about 3 years then, and that was just not quick enough. I would also accidentally zoom in 1.5x, 1.9x or 2.1 times.. It annoyed me so bad that after a year I ended up getting the iPhone 13 Pro, which came with a 3x telephoto lens. I felt a little guilty about this, but I gave my mom my "old" iPhone and I had a device that I was happy with and that was fine. I am kind of tempted to just buy a camera and only buy cheap phones from now on, but I am not a photographer and I do have my phone with me most of the time. I would not take my camera with me everywhere.

I have other devices, though, that I have had for like 5-8 years and have not replaced because they work so well... so why should I? My iPad that I bought some time in 2020 is still pretty much brand new and I've used the hell out of it, my mom has used the hell out of it and now it is in my boyfriend's hands. The same applies to my laptop. I've had it for 5 years and have been tempted to change it because "it's time," but it's not time. This thing works great, serves me well and is still being supported by software updates. The new stuff can wait.

Anyway, I dunno why I wrote this. I just imagined some tech reviewers being like "this new fridge makes round ice cubes and is 10% lighter. Should you upgrade?" and found it ridiculous and hilarious at the same time.
